We'll begin from Merthyr Tydfil railway station, following the signs for NCN Route 8 / Taff Trail. As we leave Merthyr, we'll be on a well-maintained tarmac path, gently climbing out of the town. The route follows the Taf Fechan River, providing a scenic and peaceful start. The trail passes through the Taf Fechan Nature Reserve, a beautiful area with woodlands and rivers. Great place to spot some wildlife as we cycle by or stop for a water break! After about 6 miles, we'll arrive at Pontsticill Reservoir. The trail runs along the edge of the reservoir, offering spectacular views of the water and surrounding hills. This is a great spot for a rest and some photos. After leaving the reservoir, the route begins to climb more steeply as we head into the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The path alternates between tarmac and a forest track, so be prepared for some less smooth sections. We'll reach one of the highest points on the route at Torpantau, where the trail crosses a small mountain pass. The climb is challenging, but the views across the peaks are worth the effort. From Torpantau, the route descends towards the village of Talybont-on-Usk down an old railway path. We'll follow some lovely quiet lanes before joining the towpath of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. The path here is flat and well-maintained, providing a relaxing ride into Brecon. We'll stop for an hour in Brecon for lunch / refreshments / comfort break before retracing our steps: The return journey follows the same route, and we'll take it easy climbing back up the old railway path alongside Talybont reservoir. We can enjoy the mostly downhill sections as we approach Merthyr and finish at the train station where we started.
