Wednesday 28th August 2024 10:00am

Starting from - Please note this is a 10am start as it is a long and hilly ride and we do not want to be coming back through Bradford in the rush hour.

We meet on Dock Lane in Shipley which has off street parking and is also close to Shipley Station.

After a short section of Leeds Road we head up through Windhill, using a couple of short bridleways en-route towards Wrose and then on to Bradford Moor before crossing Leeds Road and taking a no through road/track to Tyersal including an unstaffed level crossing. We then skirt round Holme Wood before crossing Tong Street and heading towards East Bierley and a long downhill to Hunsworth before joining Spen Valley Greenway near Cleckheaton. We join Calder Valley Greenway at Dewsbury Country Park and go through Mirfield before joining Birkby Bradley Greenway before dropping down to Huddersfield Broad Canal at Deighton which takes us into the centre of Huddersfield after 25 miles of cycling. There is an option for taking a train back to Bradford Interchange for those who want a shorter ride. After lunch we climb north out of Huddersfield through as quiet roads as I can find to Fixby and then through Raistrick into Brighouse. After a short period on main roads crossing the river and canal we head towards Lightcliffe, Norwood Green and Wyke on quiet roads before rejoining the Spen Valley Greenway at Oakenshaw and then following the predominantly on-road cycle route into Bradford before taking the Cycle Superhighway back to Shipley.

Route rating

0 stars (0) Reviews

Circular route from Shipley to the Grade 1 Listed Huddersfield Station and statue of local lad Harold Wilson using cycle paths, cycle tracks, canal towpath and mainly quiet but hilly roads that shows a surprisingly rural side of South Bradford.

Calder Valley, Birkby Bradley and Spen Valley Greenways plus a stretch of Huddersfield Broad Canal are traffic free along with part of the cycle superhighway from Bradford to Shipley. The majority of the other roads are in quiet urban, rural and residential areas. There are short sections of busy roads when crossing Bradford, Huddersfield and Brighouse so confidence in traffic is needed.

We will stop at Coffee Evolution in Huddersfield Centre after admiring the station and statue. The cafe is in a pedestrianised area with both inside and outside seating plus space for our bikes.

Please wear a helmet and clothing suitable for the weather plus en-route refreshments and water. Bring a spare inner tube and make sure your contact and emergency details are up to date on the Lets Ride website.
