Starting point

West Yorkshire

We head away from Hirst Wood over the canal and make our way past Baildon Station. Crossing the busy Otley Road we head through Esholt and up Old Hollins Hill into Guiseley and past Guiseley School before crossing on to Ings Road. This takes us up to West Chevin Road but we go along York Gate before crossing past the former NCH site at Hilton Grange and following Occupation Lane towards Cookridge, passing en route the large ventilation chimney for Bramhope Tunnel which at 2 miles long was one of the longest then built in 1840's. At the end of Holt Lane we turn back and up to Cookridge/Tinshill before dropping down past Horsforth Station and our refreshment stop. Going past Leeds Trinity University, formerly Trinity and All Saints College, we head towards Woodlands Drive and past Woodhouse Grove School before joining the can al at Apperley Bridge to take us back to Shipley and then back along Coach Road to Hirst Wood.

Route rating

Circular route taking in villages and suburbs to the north of Bradford and Leeds with wide open views across the Chevin before turning back at Tinshill/Cookridge and taking in the private road of Woodlands Drive, former site of Woodlands Orthopaedic Hospital, and canal from Apperley Bridge.

Apart from canal from Apperley Bridge to Shipley we are on public roads, the majority of which are quiet.

We will stop just past Horsforth Station at Hãus of Coffee though there are other options in the same parade. It is 3/5ths of way round with all but one hill climbed.

All the usual - helmet, spare inner tube, appropriate clothing.

We never leave anyone behind
