This is a perfect cycle for an evening outing. The average speed will be around 10mph and it’s aimed at those who want to enjoy a social ride with the security of riding in a group.

We leave Lanark Lifestyles and head past Smylum House to join the A743 to Carstairs. After passing through Carstairs, we cross the A721 and travel a couple of hundred yards to join the back roads to Ryeflats (unfortunately, there is a steep wee 100 yard climb here ….. bike pushing is always an option)!.

We then pass the peat farm and White Loch before rejoining the A721 for quarter of a mile. We travel along quieter roads through West End and Carstairs Junction before heading back to Carstairs.

We then pass through Carstairs and retrace our steps back to Lanark.

The majority of this route is on cycle paths and quiet roads, but the 3 mile stretch between Lanark and Carstairs is on the A743, which is a bit busier. Hopefully, it will be quiet on a summer evening.
