St Cuthberts Open Day Ride

St Cuthberts Open Day ride Sunday 31st July 2016 at 1pm 13 miles Starting from Howlands Park and Ride Josephine Butler College DH1 3TQ This will be a 13 mile ride heading west from Durham City with a visit to St Cuthbert's Hospice gardens open day on our return with cream teas. Our ride will head out from Howlands down to Sunderland Bridge, along the bridleway next to the River Wear via Scripton Gill to the Brandon Bishop Railway Path. From here we'll head up and over the hill to New Brancepeth and return via the Deerness Valley Railway Path. The ride is hilly in places as we will be riding up and out of the Wear and Deerness valleys. However it is worth the effort for the views and the sense of achievement. We'll be riding on a variety of tracks so you're best coming on a mountain bike or hybrid. Definitely not for road bikes. Any children attending should be experienced at bike riding including hills and as there's some road riding I recommend they are 11 or above. Under 16s must wear a cycle helmet. As ever, the weather can do anything so please come suitably dressed. Bring a spare inner tube for your tyre size as well as some money for refreshments. Entry to the Open Gardens is £4 plus refreshments however St Cuthberts Hospice deserves all the support we can give them. If you don't wish to stop for the gardens there will also be the option to continue directly back to the start. We will spend about 2 and a half hours out riding and at least an hour at St Cuthberts.
