Ride to Southport

The ride will leave Robin Park and follow the Wigan Pier to Southport Pier cycle route 562. We cycle on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath passing through Crooke, Gathurst, Appley Bridge and Burscough until we reach New Lane swing bridge where we leave the towpath and take to the quiet country lanes on cycle route 562. When we reach the A570 Scarisbrick New Road we go on the roadside cycle lane which continues alongside a stream before emerging in Portland Street which runs straight through to Southport Pier Gardens.

The return route will take us for a ride along the sea front before retracing our route back to Robin Park.

Barriers:-
There are a few A frame barriers in Southport.

As usual photos will be taken on the ride and will be put on the Wigan and Leigh Cycling Group Facebook page - please notify the ride leaders if you do not want your photo taken.

Some riders may find the ride challenging due to the distance but there are no hills on this ride.

The ride is a mixture of canal towpath, quiet country lanes, short stretches of busy roads and tracks and trails.

There will be short stops en route and a longer stop for refreshments at the Marine Lake Cafe near Southport Pier.

Please bring drinks/snacks or money to buy them. Helmets must be worn on this ride.

New riders are welcome on our rides and we never leave anyone behind.
