Picnic at Binchester Fort
Sunday 23rd July 2017 at 10am 20 miles
Starting point Brancepeth Station Car Park, Wolsingham Road, DH7 8DL (note that this postcode is to the nearest property rather than the car park). The car park is signed, and about 350m along Wolsingham Road from the A690.
Pedal with us to one of County Durham's best kept secrets. Binchester Roman Fort is the best preserved military bath house in all of Britain and with a chunk of Dere St clearly visible through the site.
We'll be starting our journey back to AD75 from Brancepeth and cycling via Sunderland Bridge, Tudhoe, Spennymoor. We'll return via Bishop Auckland and the Brandon Bishop Railway path.
This ride will be a bit different to usual as we will be picnicking so we all need to come prepared with our own packed lunch. There is a small entry fee of £3 (£2 concessions) and I've twisted the arm of the visitor assistant to give us a short tour (we'll be there for about an hour in total). There isn't a cafe or shop on the site but there is some shelter if it rains.
Just over half the ride will be on railway path or bridleway so apart from skinny road bikes it will be suitable for all other bikes. There's just one short slightly ropey bit of bridleway and the railway paths are a good surface.
This is just the ride if you want to start to build up your confidence mileage wise while also taking in some of Durham’s history and lovely countryside. Please come suitably dressed for the weather and make sure you’ve got a spare tube to fit your tyres.
Expect to return to Brancepeth by 3pm.
