This is a perfect cycle for a summer evening outing. The average speed will be around 10 to 11 mph and is aimed at those who want to enjoy a social ride with the security of riding in a group.

We leave the historic market town of Lanark on the cycle path passing the scenic Lanark Loch and racecourse before crossing the Clyde at Hyndford Bridge and turning left and heading along the main road for 0.5 miles. We are then on quiet, back roads and head over to Carstairs Junction through Pettinain.

We then head towards Braehead, but turn left to pass a lovely loch and then a not so lovely peat farm. Further quiet back roads roads take us back to Carstairs.

We then pass through Carstairs and Cleghorn before climbing back up to Lanark.

The vast majority of this route is on cycle paths and quiet roads, but the 1 mile stretch between Carstairs and Ravenstruther is on the A743, which is a bit busier. Hopefully, it will be quiet on a summer evening.
