Starting point

Lanarkshire

This is a hilly but rewarding route, mainly on back roads, with the occasional busy section.

We leave the historic market town of Lanark on the cycle path passing the scenic Lanark Loch and racecourse before crossing the Clyde at Hyndford Bridge (built in 1773 by Alexander Stevens) and heading over to Carmichael. We then skirt round Tinto Hill, one of the more popular walking routes in Southern Scotland. Tinto Hill is the highest point in Central Scotland and is known as the ‘Hill of Fire’, which may refer to its ancient past as a look out beacon.

We will take time out to stop at the Tinto Tea Room for refreshments before heading over to Thankerton, across the Clyde at the Boat Bridge and climbing up the hill to the village of Quothquan.

After passing through Quothquan, we climb up to Liberton and then onto Carnwath. After leaving Carnwath, we head onto quieter roads through West End and Carstairs, before heading back to Lanark.

Please note that this is a STEADY ride, so we will aim to cycle at around 12mph. We try to follow quieter roads, but some of the route is on busier A roads.
