Newport velodrome to Cwmbran

The route heads out of the velodrome car park and picks up the cycle path (NCN route 4) that heads towards Cardiff. We follow the route and then head towards Tredegar Park. Riding through the park, we head under the motorway and then tackle the short climb up Western Ave. From here, we go along Brickyard Lane and join the canal towpath. We stay on the towpath as we climb gently up to Cwmbran. Once we get to Henllys Way, we turn to follow the cycle path along the road until we reach the cafe.
After a short rest, we retrace our route back down the canal but turn left as we reach Newport. We then follow the cycle path along the eastern side of the river and back to the velodrome.

A loop around Newport and up/down the canal to Cwmbran

The majority of the route is traffic free with the remainder on quiet residential roads

We will stop and try out Tommys cafe in Cwmbran or failing that, the cafe at the boating lake

Please wear a helmet and bring along some money and a lock for the cafe stop. It is also a good idea to carry a spare tube just in case.
