Starting point

Midlothian

A scenic cycle from West Edinburgh taking in views over South Queensferry, North Queensferry and the iconic Queensferry Crossing, Forth road and rail bridges from both sides of the Forth.

This is not a flat route, there are several undulations but we will allow plenty of time for photo opportunities, snacks and breathers. In total, approximately 1300' of climbing interspersed with some lovely downhills and fabulous views.

A stiff climb from Inverkeithing up and over to North Queensferry is probably the most challenging but it isn't too long and there is a wide pavement if you need to take a break and push your bike. There is also a short, very steep downhill (20% gradient) as we enter the village where we will dismount and walk with our bikes, applying brakes. Please bear this in mind if you have a particularly heavy e-bike.

We'll stop for refreshments by the shore, there is a small cafe with indoor and outdoor seating or we can bring our own picnic, there are benches nearby at Willie's Well.

Returning to South Queensferry we'll take a different route to Dalmeny along a disused railway line then drop down (after a few more undulations) to cross the River Almond at the Cramond Brig. Another scenic loop with views over Cramond Island and Silverknowes beach will bring us to Davidsons Mains where we'll take the woodland path and quiet roads to Barnton, Cammo Meadows, Cammo Walk and back to our starting point.

This is a ride for good weather so we will keep an eye on the forecast. A little rain can be tolerated but not high winds. The ride may be shortened or rescheduled if need be.

Please bring your usual equipment, spare inner tubes etc, snacks, water for the ride, money for refreshments if you want to purchase anything at the cafe and/or a picnic if you like. Helmets are strongly recommended.
