Durham Breeze celebrates Billie Fleming World Record Holder

Saturday 19th September 2015 1pm 28 miles Durham Breeze celebrates Billie Fleming World Record Holder Starting point Durham Castle, Palace Green, Durham DH1 3RW Castles of the River Wear Breeze Network Durham is proud to be part of the 2015 tribute ride to Billie Fleming. Billie, who sadly died last year at the age of 100, has the world record for the most number of miles ridden by a woman in a year (nearly 30,000) which she achieved in 1938. We will be hosting Day 262 of a total of 365 days of riding to celebrate Billie’s achievement. Her ride brought her to the north east during mid September 1938. To make this a very special occasion we’ll be riding between two of our County’s most iconic landmarks, Durham Castle and Bishop Auckland Castle, both having been home to the Bishop of Durham at various times in history. We’ll be riding there and back along a mix of roads and railway paths, a total of about 28 miles. We will enjoy tea/coffee and cake at Auckland Castle. We will be wished farewell from Durham by the chairwoman of Durham County Council, Jan Blakey, while we will be welcomed to Bishop Auckland by local County Councillor Joy Allen. Joy has been a keen supporter of Breeze for a couple of years now.
