Starting point

Midlothian
EH8 9LD

This ride is offered as part of the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling.

We will ride from the Meadows through George Square and Southside to join Queen’s Drive in Holyrood Park just before Dynamic Earth. We then follow the park road, cycle around the side of the Parade Ground and exit Holyrood Park on to Royal Park Terrace, where we cut through housing to Lower London Road. We then either cross straight over London Road or, if the road is busy, go up to the traffic crossing, and make our way to Lochend Park and then join the Restalrig Railway Path. We follow this as far as Seafield Road, where we turn right and then head along the coastal path to Portobello Promenade, and then along the main road at Joppa to join the Brunstane Burn path. From here, we follow the Innocent Cycle Path through Magdalene Glen. We then have a couple of roads to reach the entrance to Duddingston Golf Course. After crossing the golf course on the path, it is only a short distance to our destination of Dr Neil’s Garden, where we will stop for refreshments and a wander around the gardens. After our stop, we cycle up Old Church Lane to Duddingston Low Road as far as the exit on to Holyrood Park Road. From here, we follow the cycle paths back to the Meadows.

Starting from the Meadows, we will go through Holyrood Park, Lochend Park, Portobello promenade and Brunstane Burn before reaching Dr Neil’s Secret Garden in Duddingston. We will stop there for refreshments and a wander around the garden before returning to our starting point in The Meadows.

The route is mostly cycle / shared use paths, with a few short sections on roads and a short section of cobbles. The path surfaces are suitable for all tyre types. We will cross the busy London Road near Meadowbank, but we won’t need to cycle along London Road. There are some inclines, most notably when we leave Dr Neil’s Garden after our café stop, but no really steep hills.

We will stop at the Garden café in Dr Neil’s garden for refreshments and a wander around the garden.

Bring a payment card or cash if you wish to buy any refreshments at Dr Neil’s Garden. Also bring a spare inner tube if you have one, and plan a means of getting home in the event of mechanical breakdown. Helmets are strongly advised.

We never leave anyone behind
