Just because it is winter doesn’t mean your bike has to hibernate. As long as you wrap up warm (gloves and a wind-proof jacket are a must, and a hat under your helmet is a good idea), with crisp sunshine and quiet paths it can be a lovely time to get onto two wheels.

There is a great, traffic-free route between Swansea University's two campuses, following the sweep of Swansea Bay. Much of the route is obvious, although it can get a bit confusing near the Marina and along Fabian Way, so why not join some of the Uni's British Cycling trained ride leaders who ride the path every day, to discover a cheap, healthy and (above all) fun way of travelling between the campuses.

Meeting at the Santander Bikes stand outside Fulton House, we leave the campus before crossing to the seafront cycle path and following the curve of Swansea Bay to cross the river Tawe at Trafalgar Bridge by Trinity St David's new campus. The path then runs along the waterfront of Prince’s Dock before heading inland to run alongside Fabian Way and around the back of the park and ride, eventually crossing back under the main road at Baldwin’s Bridge to enter the Bay Campus. We will then park up and enjoy a well-deserved warming drink at Costa in the College (remember some money if you want refreshments). We will then set off on the return route for those who want to go back.

The whole route is traffic free (although there are a few road crossings), almost flat, and well surfaced, so suitable for all types of bike.

All you need is a roadworthy bike (check tyres and brakes before setting off), lock and a helmet (and some money for a drink at the café). Don't have your own bike? Because we will be starting and finishing at a Santander Bikes station, there is always the option to hire a bike for the trip.
