Starting point

Midlothian
EH4 2BH

A lovely scenic meander through the Dalmeny estate along the coast to South Queensferry, returning a different way and with options to vary the route depending on conditions on the day.

We set out on paths from Craigleith to Davidsons Mains then through the park and woods to Barnton. Crossing to Barntongate then Meadowsweet we emerge on Cammo Road then make our way to the Miller & Carter just above the Cramond Brig.

We first enter the Dalmeny Estate at the Burnshot gate, following the estate roads towards the Forth and past the house and statue. Turning west, we take the woodland path to South Queensferry.

We will stop periodically to catch our breath and will have a cafe stop in South Queensferry. Cycling along the cobbled High Street we'll make our way up to the Forth Bridges Viewpoint for another stop.

Returning a different route through South Queensferry and passing Dalmeny Station we'll re-enter the estate at the Leuchold Gate, following another well-surfaced estate road through open farmland with glorious views over the Forth. After passing the house for a second time we'll take the woodland paths and tracks towards the River Almond, Miller & Carter and the Cramond Brig.

Crossing Whitehouse Road to another woodland path between the two golf courses to reach Davidsons Mains and the Blackhall path which takes us back to our starting point.

These are quiet roads and cycle paths which are tarmac; woodland tracks which are hard packed but may be muddy if there has been a lot of rain. The route is best enjoyed on a fine Autumn day to savour the best of the woodland paths, colours and views so we will be keeping an eye on the weather forecast! If the weather is less favourable there are options to take a drier route but still enjoy the ride.

You can expect some hills on this route as we climb up to the higher points to enjoy the views. They are mostly short sections and not too steep, with lots of catch up stops in between.
We will of course be rewarded by downhills too!

There will be several opportunities to stop and catch our breath, enjoy the views and take photos. Bring a snack and water for the ride, and money if you want to purchase anything at our cafe stop (or bring your own refreshments).

Please wear clothing appropriate for the weather, have your bike in good order and bring a spare inner tube, pump and any tools needed to remove a wheel should you need to - or a strategy for getting yourself home in the event of a mechanical (eg friend/taxi).

We never leave anyone behind!
