The ride heads out from the car park to follow the Wye Valley greenway the 5 miles to Tintern. Along the way to the tunnel it is a mix of gravel paths and quiet lanes. The tunnel itself is just over 1km long and dimly lit so you need to be comfortable riding through it. The other side of the tunnel is a bit rougher in places but pretty. Once we reach Tintern and cross the bridge we are going to do a little loop along the lanes to visit the ruins of Tintern furnace before heading back into Tintern and down to the Anchor Inn next to the abbey ruins.
After our rest stop, we head back over the bridge and retrace our route back through the tunnel to Chepstow.

A chance to ride through the second longest cycling tunnel in the UK. A very pretty ride from the outskirts of Chepstow to Tintern.

This route uses mostly traffic free multi user trails and some quiet lanes. The trails on either side of the tunnel are a mix of compacted gravel, loose gravel and earth so are not suitable for road bikes with smooth skinny tyres. Through the tunnel, it is tarmac but is often wet so mudguards are a good idea. A perfect ride for gravel bikes, mountain bikes and hybrids.

We will stop at Tintern furnace for a chance to explore the ruins and then stop at the tearooms at the Anchor Inn by the abbey for refreshments

Please wear a helmet and bring some money and a lock for the rest stop. Also carrying a spare tube is a good idea just in case.

We especially welcome newbies!
