Starting point

Lanarkshire

There are lot of things to see on this ride.

We leave the historic market town of Lanark on the cycle path passing the scenic Lanark Loch and racecourse before crossing the Clyde at Hyndford Bridge (built in 1773 by Alexander Stevens) and heading over to Carmichael. We then skirt round Tinto Hill, one of the more popular walking routes in Southern Scotland. Tinto Hill is the highest point in Central Scotland and is known as the ‘Hill of Fire’, which may refer to its ancient past as a look out beacon.

We then head over to Covington passing a memorial to Rev, Donald Cargill, a 17th century Scottish Presbyterian and Covenanter and a memorial to Robert Burns. Both men are believed to have stayed at Covington Mains Farm.

After passing the Covington Mains Farm, we can stop at the Milk Bar for those in need of nourishment….

We then head over to Pettinain and cross the Clyde again before climbing back up to Lanark.

Please note that the first 16.5 miles of this route are on cycle paths and quiet roads, but the last 3 miles are on the A73, which is a bit busier.
