From the Pier Head, we take the canal path to Bootle Rimrose Park before dropping down to the coast where we stay until we reach Southport. Enjoy the autumn trees in Formby woods, and the villages of Hightown and Formby along the way.

Part of our Breeze ride series, "Autumn to Winter", which will see us explore many great cycle routes in the Merseyside and Cheshire region. Today we will stretch our legs on a flat route from the Pier Head to Southport, where we will stop for a coffee. Riders then have the option of taking the Merseyrail train home, or maybe cycling back some, or all of the way!

The route is mostly traffic-free, using the canal, parks and the coastal path. However, there are some short stretches of road and riders should be confident to ride amongst other traffic.

We will be stopping in Southport for refreshments.

Any sort of bike is suitable for this ride, though the short route through Formby woods can sometimes be a bit slippy with leaves or mud. Therefore a winter-style set of tyres is better than narrow racing tyres. Bring a snack and water, and warm layers of clothing including waterproofs.

First time out with a group? Don't worry, come along and give it a try. We ride along the route of the Merseyrail Northern Line, so you can do as much of the route as you can and still be able to jump a train home!
