Chisnall Hall Colliery, Coppull was the largest coal mine on the Lancashire Coalfield north of Wigan and closed on the 24th March 1967. The site was restored by Lancashire County Council in the 1980s and opened to the public.
This ride will leave Robin Park to join the Leeds and Liverpool canal towpath to cycle past Wigan Pier and climb up some of the locks of the Wigan flight to Whelley Loop Line which connects to the New Bee Network extension to Hall Lane. From Hall Lane we cycle to Haigh Hall before descending on tracks to Red Rock canal bridge where the route will cut through Arley Golf Course before continuing on farm tracks and cycle route 55 to Adlington. We leave the canal at Rawlinsons Bridge 71 (near the Red Bus Cafe) and take to bridlepaths, farm tracks and minor roads towards Coppull and Chisnall Hall Nature Reserve. After crossing the nature reserve and the M6 motorway we head for Mossy Lea and Wrightington where we will have a refreshment stop. Please bring a drink/snacks or money to buy them.
The return journey will be via the Standish Mineral Line to Beech Hill, behind Millikens, past the Cherry Gardens, up Hall lane, back on the Whelley Loop Line before descending the Wigan Locks to Robin Park.
This ride will be challenging for beginners due to the various climbs at the beginning of the route and the distance of approximately 25 miles.

The ride is a mixture of canal towpath, bridlepaths, country lanes and multi user pathways.

We will have short stops en route and a longer stop for refreshments at the Pret a Manger at Wrightington.

Helmets should be worn on this ride. Please make sure your bike is in good working order and carry a spare inner tube and/or puncture repair kit.

We never leave anyone behind
