Kirkham

The route takes you through many of the small villages of the Fylde passing ancient Churches, converted windmills and country pubs, renowned for serving local produce.

Starting in the Ancient Market Town of Kirkham, you climb up two hills passing the small shops and cafes that line the town’s main thorough fair. After a steep descent you head east and are soon out in the open country side, riding on quiet country roads with fine views of the Bowland fells.

Heading first to Catforth, the road undulates crossing the railway, canal and motorway. Once out of Catforth it weaves its way through quiet country lanes which although flat can be very challenging on a windy day. Upon reaching the small village of St Michaels on Wyre it cross over the river Wyre and passed the Grade 1 listed church of St Michaels on Wyre.  Then it’s time to enjoy the long flat run along the river Wyre to the toll bridge at Cartford.  Look out for the many different species of birds that inhabit this area and try to catch a glimpse of the Lakeland fells in the distance.  After paying the 20p toll, enjoy the short sharp climb up to the bustling village of Great Eccleston.

From here it is a slightly downhill stretch to Elswick where you can enjoy a coffee or ice cream at Bonds of Elswick. Look out for the old Gate House of Elswick Manor which is nestled in some trees.

After leaving Elswick the route heads south, to make its way through the communities of Wharles and Treales to tackle the short climbs over the motorway.  This is again a chance to enjoy the views of the Bowland Fells and time to lookout for Lapwings, Buzzards and Kestrels.

Finally the route arrives at Salwick where there is an opportunity for a short break to enjoy views of the canal at the Hand and Dagger pub before the final stage back to Kirkham.
