Tring
The Chilterns' most celebrated chocolate factory was created in Great Missenden. That is the destination for the first part of the route as you travel from the Tring Gap across one of the Chilterns plateaus to Great Missenden where Roald Dahl wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and where his works are celebrated in the Roald Dahl Museum. After leaveing Tring you start a long but gradual ascent to the village of Wigginton. Thereafter you have a flat-ish ride along quiet lanes and through lovely Chilterns' villages to the edge of the Missenbourne Valley and a steep descent to Great Missenden. Why not stop at the Cross Keys where they pride themselves on their cake. After suitable refreshments you'll start the return trip with a walk up the steep path back to the 'plateau' and then another lovely ride through more lovely lanes and scenic Chilterns villages back to Tring via the picturesque village of Albury. You'll pass through Cholesbury, with connections to the Bloomsbury Group around the time of the first world war, the hamlet of Swan Bottom with its 16th century inn and the pretty village of Albury with it's village pond and stocks and whipping post. This is a great route if you are a reasonably fit cyclist and want to explore new fantastic cycling routes or to revisit an area you are familiar with.
