Full Gas Bikes, 2 Fox Valley Way, Stocksbridge, Sheffield
Here is the last of the Wheel Do It! challenge rides for October! This ride starts at Full Gas Bikes and heads out through Penistone along the roads towards Dunford Bridge, turning right past Winscar Reservoir and up Hade Edge. We then head through rolling hills and pretty lanes almost as far as Holmfirth, before heading up to the village of Holme and to the foot of the climb up to Holme Moss. Here we have two options: (1) have a go at the famous Holme Moss climb (1.5 miles with an average 10% gradient); or (2) adjourn to the Fleece Inn for refreshments and something to eat. Those that tackle the Holme Moss climb will have the chance to take in the stunning views from the top before returning to the foot of the climb for food/drink at The Fleece. Once everyone has refreshed themselves and restored their energy levels, we'll return via a slightly different route to Full Gas Bikes for a well earned coffee and another opportunity to purchase their excellent cake.
This is a great ride to do if you have been building up to in on other Wheel Do It! rides. Please note that there are some challenging climbs (even without the final ascent of Holme Moss) and there are a few short sections where fast moving traffic may be present (the majority is on relatively quiet roads and lanes). The ride is best done on a road bike (or a hybrid with road tyres) - mountain bikes are not recommended.
Although there are some long and steep hills on this ride, we'll take it steady and it is fine to walk up the steeper bits if you need to. We promise not to leave anyone behind.
Don't forget to bring sufficient food to keep you going (gels, chocolate, flapjacks or similar) and plenty to drink (water, energy drinks, etc.).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS
We recommend that you wear a helmet. Please make sure you wear appropriate clothing for the weather.
As usual we do expect you to have ensured your bike is roadworthy and that you have carried out basic pre-ride checks; you should also carry at least one spare inner tube, a pump, and tools to enable you to change a tube if necessary. Don’t forget to bring money for refreshments and a mobile phone.
