Here is an alternative option for those of you who’d like to do Saturday’s hilly little circuit around some of the roads used for the Battle of Bradfield sportive, but with a coffee/cake stop included at the half way point. We'll all set off from our usual start point on Loxley Road but instead of heading towards Damflask, we'll take an immediate right turn up Hallowmoor Road. The road climbs steadily up to Worral before dropping sharply down to Oughtibridge. There is then a long and in places quite steep climb of Jawbone (or the Cote d'Oughtibridge as it was named for the Tour de France), which continues up to Grenoside. From there the route continues towards Wortley before another climb up to Green Moor. This ride then turns left and drops down Pea Royd lane for a coffee stop at Full Gas Bikes in Fox Valley. After the stop the ride continues through Stocksbridge, up another steady climb to Mortimer Road followed by more ups and downs and a descent through Wigtwizzle. There is then a short climb and a steep descent before Ewden Village. After crossing the river there is another steep climb. Next comes a short flat section and one last long (and in places steep) climb before the road flattens out and then drops down Long Lane to Loxley Road to return to the start point. This route has some challenging climbs. But as usual, will be done at the pace of the slowest and no-one will get left behind. Although there is a cafe stop on this route, don't forget to bring extra food and drink to fuel your ride. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS We recommend that you wear a helmet. Please make sure you wear appropriate clothing for the weather. As usual we do expect you to have ensured your bike is roadworthy and that you have carried out basic pre-ride checks; we recommend that you also carry at least one spare inner tube, a pump (CO2 inflators are also highly recommended). If you have a mechanical problem we will do our best to assist you and/or lend you an inner tube or repair kit if we can, but it is always best to be self-reliant. Don’t forget to bring money for refreshments and a mobile phone.
