This ride is not hilly or fast-paced, it’s only classified as challenging because of the long distance. We also have to cycle through some busy junctions and roads (although it is mainly a quiet, segregated route) so you need to be confident in traffic.
This is a day out in the Greenwich Peninsula and Isle of Dogs, stopping at various points of interest for pictures and admiring the views. When cycling, we will go at a steady pace, but we don’t rush through our stops. We also take the IFS Cloud cable car (yes, with our bikes!) to cross the river from Greenwich to the ExCel, which sometimes have a bit of a queue. We aim to be back at Wembley Park by 17.30.
We head off to Westminster Bridge to cycle south of the river all the way to Rotherhithe where we will see some interesting points, like the
Salter statues. We carry on cycling along the river until we reach Greenwich and the
market. If the weather is nice we can have a picnic at
Greenwich Park (note no cycling is allowed in the park).
After our well-deserved lunch break, we continue in the direction of Greenwich Peninsula until we get to the
cable car. To avoid the ticket office queues, please bring a contactless card, phone with a pay app or Oyster card which can be used at the gates in and out of the cable car (single adult fare £6). With our bikes, we are allowed 2 in each car.
On the other side of the river, we continue our adventure along the Thames at the
Isle of Dogs with beautiful views of Canary Wharf. When we get to Limehouse, we have our final refreshment stop at the quirky
Yurt Café. Thereafter, we will visit the
Battle of Cable Street mural before we head back to Brent via CS3 from Tower Bridge till Hyde Park following the
Coronation route along Whitehall passing 10 Downing Street then down The Mall towards Buckingham Palace.
In Hyde Park we will pass the
Serpentine Lido (and Hyde Park Toilets), the
Princess Diana Memorial Fountain, the
ISIS/Serenity statue, Kensington Palace, the
Queen Victoria statue and the Diana Memorial Playground. We leave Hyde Park northbound returning via the Grand Union canal.
Those who feel tired or don’t want to carry on will have several options along the route to take a train back (DLR, Overground and even the
ferry from Greenwich to Westminster).
