Starting point

DH8 5RE

We'll meet at the Entrance to the Hownsgill Viaduct/Waskerley Way cycle path, just off the roundabout opposite Morrisons Consett.

The Waskerley Way is a beautiful 9.7 mile route passing through a varied landscape, from urban fringe through to upland sheep farms and on to exposed heather moorland. You will pass through one of the most impressive railway structures in North East England at Hownsgill Viaduct – towering 46 metres above the tree canopy of Knitsley and High House woods. Enjoy stunning views across Smiddy Shaw, Waskerley and Hisehope reservoirs. The route is mostly double width track, with either tarmac or fine stone surfaces, it can be muddy and rough in places. There are some narrow width restrictions. Outbound it is mostly uphill, this is generally gradual in assent, with a few steep sections. The return journey is downhill. We will turn around after a cafe stop at Parkhead Station. Please dress suitably for the weather forecast and remember we are going to be on exposed moorland (although on a national cycle route). Helmets are advised but not essential. Bring water and snacks.
