Starting point

Surrey
KT16 9AY

From Chertsey, the route follows minor roads south past Woking towards Guildford.
This initial section uses roadside paths and the occasional shared pavement—functional but not scenic

From Guildford, you join the Downs Link: a largely flat, off-road rail trail converted from the former Cranleigh and Steyning railway lines (≈37 mi)

The ride passes through or near Shalford, Bramley & Wonersh, Baynard’s Tunnel (sealed and now a path with a short steep climb and narrow descent), and Cranleigh village (good mid‑route café stop)
Two Wheel Tubby

The surface transitions to gravel or loose dirt in places, muddy or slippery when wet. Suitable for hybrids, gravel bikes, sturdy tourers or mountain bikes—road bikes only with wider touring tyres and in dry conditions

We will pass through Southwater Country Park—with a lake, play areas, café, and wildlife spotting opportunities (kingfishers, nightingales, butterflies)

Further south, the route skirts Coombes, passes Passies Pond Fishery, runs through Itchingfield, then onto Partridge Green, merging into Chichester suburbs before descending along the River Adur floodplain into Shoreham

Near Shoreham you pass Bramber Castle, just off-route—a scenic stop with historic interest overlooking the Adur

After arriving in Shoreham we will follow NCN2 to Brighton to catch train back.

Route rating

0 stars (0) Reviews

Quiet route to Shoreham following the Downs link NCN223 and them following NCN2 to Brighton where we will get the train back to London and home.

Modtly traffic‑free, following disused railway lines (the Downs Link) south of Guildford. Surfaces include compacted earth, gravel, and tarmac, with short on-road segments near Christ’s Hospital and Shoreham

Various along route, 2 wheeled tubby in Cranleigh will likely be the first stop at 37miles.

Bike choice: Hybrid or gravel bike recommended. Road bikes only in dry conditions with 30 mm+ tyres Mud warning: South of Guildford, particularly near Cranleigh and Baynard’s Tunnel, routes hold water and can turn muddy—especially within a week of rainfall Navigation: Fully signposted as NCN Route 223. Some riders nevertheless recommend using GPX or OS Maps as backup—signage can be missing or conflicting in places Logistics: Accessible by train at Shalford, Christ’s Hospital, West Grinstead, and Shoreham-by-Sea—you can join or leave mid-ride if desired

We never leave anyone behind
