The Whitwell Hop

Our meeting place for this ride on Saturday 3rd August 2013 is the car park at Active Luton, Wigmore Hall, Wigmore Place, Luton, LU2 9JB (just off Eaton Green Road, behind Luton Airport). As soon as we leave the car park we are in the countryside, heading out towards Cockernhoe and Great Offley where the Anglo Saxon Offa was declared King of the Mercians.  From here we ride through leafy lanes to Ley Green and Cedar Wood before we reach the village of Whitwell, noted for its cress beds. Here we stop for refreshments at Emily's Tea Shop, which as well as a cafe has a few small businesses to explore including a bike shop! After refreshments a short sharp hill takes us out of Whitwell and on through more lanes until we reach Peters Green and from there it's a short ride to the airport, underneath the flighpath of landing planes, and towards home. This is a 17 mile ride and is suitable for all riders. Newcomers are always welcome. We always ride at the pace of the slowest rider so no one is left behind. The route is all road so suitable for all types of bicycles.  It's a good idea to bring some water and you may also want to bring a snack.  Dress appropriately for the weather and please bring a puncture repair kit. Wearing a helmet is advisable; if you don’t have one please do not to worry you can still take part.  If you enjoy the bike ride and would like to come again perhaps you could look to buy one then.
