Southampton Common

If you’re fairly confident on your bike and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, rides take place on mainly quiet roads with plenty of sights along the way. Rides are between 6 and 20 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour.   Join us on this six and a half mile steady family ride centred on Southampton Common and discovering routes through Highfield and Portswood. This route has something to interest the whole family - the Common boasts the Hawthorns Nature Study Centre & cafe (which many years ago used to be a zoo), the children's playground, cycle centre training track where you can return to practice your road skills, ornamental lake & Boat Lake, and the cattle pound. All of these can be enjoyed before the ride takes you on a combination of traffic-free paths and quiet roads past the  University of Southampton, (one of the top performing universities in the country) to Portswood where the kids are sure to enjoy the playground. Dont forget to bring a bit of money for a drink inthe pub when we get back!
