Sunday Breeze to the Roman Ruins

We are cycling to the ruins of the Roman Ampitheatre in Silchester, and to the quiet roads that skirt the ruins of the town and walls of Calleva Atrebatum. We begin our Roman tour on Wall Lane to the north of the ruins although from the road, the ruins are now obscured from sight by hedges and overgrowth.

Please arrive with time to spare, we leave at 9:30am

Our route is: Hartley Wintney, Dipley, Stratfield Saye, the NCN23 then the Calleva Trail (tarmac/road) to Silchester and Bramley, Stratfield Saye and back again. Quiet roads and lanes, a gently rolling route.

We shall have a brief stop at the Ampitheatre (10.5miles) for a little wander and photos.

Our coffee stop is 5miles later at Warings Bakery in Bramley (15.5miles), where Bramley Village Bakery used to be. 10 miles to finish (25.5miles).

Back around 1pm

A steady, friendly pace; cycling along tidily. Unrushed. Looking out for each other. No one left behind.

Helmets are compulsory. Please also ensure that your bicycle is in good working condition (bike is clean and oiled, no rattling or squeaking (annoying/ ominous...), tyres correctly inflated, brakes sharp!) Bring along a spare inner tube if you are running clinchers (“regular” tyres and not tubeless tyres).
