Summer evening ride to Hett Mill and Whitwell

Start at Merryoaks Community Hall, Parkhouse Rd, DH1 3QF

Join us for a relaxed evening ride exploring some of Durham’s hidden tracks and paths.

We’ll leave Merryoaks to initially freewheel alongside the A167 to the Honest Lawyer from where we’ll climb our way through Sunderland Bridge and Hett before heading to Hett Mill where we cross the EastCoast Main line. Here we start our off road bridleway sections, initially to Bowburn and then via Whitwell to return along Mill Lane with a short section on a busier road. We will weave our way through the University along lots of recently installed paths to find our way back to Merryoaks.

The ride is most suitable for hybrid bikes as it is a mix of on and off road. It is definitely not for a road bike.

In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Please make sure your bike is in working condition and bring a spare tube to fit your tyres. We should be riding for about an hour and a half and there will be the option to stop for a cuppa/drink once back in town.

As always we can’t predict the weather so please dress suitably.

If the weather is unfavourable we will only contact you if we are cancelling the ride and will do so no later than 5.30pm on the day. If you have not heard from us it is going ahead.
