South Nottingham Circuit

We will meet outside Portland Leisure Centre, where there is a car park available. The route starts along the River passing Nottingham Forest Football Ground, the ride continues up to Holme Pierre Point along the river and then passes through several small villages in South Nottingham including Radcliffe, Cropwell Butler, Tythby and Colstan Basset (where you will see the famous cheese factory). Other sights include Langar Hall and Colstan Bassett Hall. The ride then becomes a little bit tougher with a hill to climb at Owthorpe (but it is worth it for the views). We then head into Cotgrave before heading up another incline to ride through the village of Clipson. Finally we return through Tollerton and past the Nottingham Airport (where we can stop for a piece of cake and a cup of tea). The ride then re-joins the river route taken out to return to Portland Leisure Centre.  This ride is around 25 miles in total with two steepish hill climb, so you'll need to be confident to ride uphill with your gears and stand up out of the saddle for the steepest sections. A road bike or hybrid would suit this course best as we'll ride at a brisk pace. Although we are riding mainly on quiet country roads, this is nevertheless a road-ride nearly all the way, so you'll need to be stable and confident on your bike as this route is not traffic-free. It's a good idea to bring some water and you may also want to bring a snack if you think your energy levels may need topping up along the way.  Wearing a helmet is advisable.
