Scotswood Community Garden is a little green gem in the urban heart of the West End of Newcastle. Developed on an old school site it’s now a vibrant verdant oasis with spring and summer meadows, three ponds that are home to three varieties of newt including the rare great crested newt. You may get a chance to see one up close with some pond dipping! Sculptures and willow work fencing that seem to grow up from the earth in unexpected places. The forest trees are some of the oldest of their kind in the country growing a variety of fruit and nuts – used by the garden for cookery and education projects. We'll be visiting the spring open day and will have an hour to have a proper explore and refuel on the lovely home made cakes. The cakes may well have garden ingredients in them! The route includes a hill on the way there – it’s fine to walk it if you wish, I’ll keep you company and nobody will be left behind, however it’s possible to grind up it with a low gear and some determination, you’ll earn your cake! It’s all downhill on the way back. Please bring a spare innertube for your bike, a puncture repair kit, a lock and a drink. Entry to the garden is free but you may wish to bring some change for the stalls and refreshments at the garden. http://sncg.org.uk/the-garden/about-the-garden
