Join us on this fantastic, scenic 24 mile ride through the stunning moorlands of Saddleworth Moor and the Calderdale Valley. The route begins at the car park at West Vale next to the Brow bridge cafe Halifax HX4 8AL and then takes us up Saddleworth road, passing through Barkisland village and Ringtone Edge Reservoir. We will then reach the viewpoint at Marsden car park (New Hay Rd) where we can stop for a well earned rest and take in the amazing views of March Haigh Reservoir and the surrounding area of Saddleworth Moor.
We then begin our first long and winding descent of the day down Huddersfield road passing Dowry Reservoir and into Denshaw village, Saddleworth.
Here is where we start the first big ascent up the A672 (Ripponden Rd) for approximately 2 miles before reaching the Windy Hill Transmitter. Then it's down and under the M62, along Oldham Rd into Rishworth where we will stop for refreshments at the Just Scrumptious Cafe, or if you prefer you can grab some food at the nearby sandwich shop.
After lunch, we then tackle the 2nd and last big climb of the day, up and over Ripponden New Bank to Barkisland, where we will descend back down Saddleworth Rd to the finish.
If you are driving to the start point you can use the public car park at HX4 8AL however charges will apply and there is a height restriction, so be aware if your bikes are on a roof rack!!
Alternatively there is plenty of street parking behind West Vale Academy or on Church Street which is just across from the car park.
Please don’t forget to bring some money and most importantly a bike lock for the cafe stop. See you soon.
