Route Description
We’ll start by cycling along the peaceful Manse Road before joining the old railway path. This path, now a designated cycle route, is paved and traffic-free, offering us a smooth, safe ride through lovely rural landscapes. As we ride, we’ll pass sights like the Battle of Rosslyn memorial and the Bilston viaduct—perfect for a bit of local history on the go and some lovely views.

After reaching Shawfair, we’ll turn around and head back to Roslin, where those who wish can join us at Dolly’s Teahouse for coffee or lunch. This social stop is optional, but a perfect way to unwind together after the ride. The entire journey will take around 60–90 minutes of riding, depending on the group pace.

About the Route This gentle, scenic ride will take us on a 9.92-mile loop from Roslin to Shawfair and back, with the option to gather afterward at Dolly’s Teahouse for coffee or lunch. This route is ideal for those who want to enjoy the fresh autumn air without much elevation—just 318 feet over mostly flat paths—making it manageable for cyclists of all abilities. This lunchtime ride is perfect for anyone working from home who would like to get out, stretch their legs, and enjoy a break in the middle of the day.

This is a mostly traffic free route on a paved surface suitable for any bike.

We will pause for photos and to regroup at Shawfair and on the return leg or as needed by the group. There will be the option for coffee or lunch at Dolly's at the end of the ride.

What to Bring Bike in good working condition: Ensure your bike is well-maintained for a safe and smooth ride. Helmet: Strongly recommended for safety. Spare inner tube: Handy in case of a flat tire. Bike lock: Useful if you’re joining the coffee stop. Layers: Dress in layers to stay comfortable, including a waterproof jacket. Water bottle and snacks: Stay hydrated and energized. Payment: Bring cash or a card if you plan to join us at Dolly’s for coffee or lunch. Please note: While we’ll always stay together and support each other, it’s a good idea to have a plan for getting home in case you need to leave the ride early due to a mechanical issue or other reason.

If you’re new to cycling or haven’t been out in a while, don’t worry—this ride is all about enjoying the fresh air, getting a bit of exercise, and meeting others. We’ll keep a friendly, relaxed pace, and no one will be left behind. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors, stretch your legs, and ease into regular riding. We’re happy to answer any questions along the way, so feel free to reach out if you have any!
