Starting point

Lancashire
PR5 4TD

Departing Walton-Le-Dale Primary School via adjacent cycleway onto Hennel Lane and then The Old Tram Road, it continues towards the viaduct, descending underneath it and on to the south bank of the Ribble where it crosses the Ribble at Penwortham Old Bridge. Picking up the Guild Wheel's shared cycleway the route follows the Ribble to the docks and the Beach Café.

From the café the route navigates around the north side of the docks, traverses the eastern section, onto the south side of the docks, and then breaks away onto Britannia Drive to then cross directly over Navigation Way to the pedestrian crossing of the Ribble Steam Railway line. Following the Guild Wheel back to and through Avenham Park on the north shore of the Ribble, the route then emerges onto London Way which is descended to Winery Lane. Following Winery Lane, over the cattle grid at the bridge, and then left towards Walton Hall Farm, the route then picks up cycle way to Hennel Lane and back to the start/finish at the school.

A Trip around The Docks is circa 12 miles and suitable for most ride levels. Largely utilising shared cycleway and the occasional quiet road this is a vary safe route for younger riders. A loop of the docks including a café stop is especially pretty in the sunshine - pray for sun folks!

The majority of this route is traffic free, largely utilising shared cycleways. With exception of the cycleway adjacent to the school at the start/finish point, and a short run up to the Bull Nose at the docks, all surfaces are sealed. The route is suitable for all types of bikes though best suited to hybrids with chunky tyres, MTBs, and gravel bikes. The route can be ridden on a road bike however caution is advised on the two unsurfaced sections, especially in winter.

Throughout the ride we will pause for drinks/snacks as required, especially for the younger ones who require permanent fueling. There is a café stop planned at the Beach Café at Preston Docks.

Helmets are mandatory for all junior riders, and we strongly advise them for all riders. Being a spare tube for each of bike on the ride as we cannot cover off all the different tyre sizes and types! Bring drinks, snacks, a positive attitude, and a smile.
