Taking the cycle path and quiet country lanes out of Dorchester (NCN2), we head to Higher Bockhampton where Thomas Hardy's birthplace, a cottage managed by the National Trust, sits.

We will have a picnic in Thorncombe Woods, next to Hardy's cottage, before heading back into Dorchester the way we came. If you run out of time to pull a picnic together for yourself, there is a cafe selling food and drink at the entrance to the woods.
