This is one of Chris and my favourite routes. We put it together last year during the various lockdowns and have now riden it lots of times. We're really looking forward to sharing it with you. The route is a loop - out we will climb high cross country - and after lunch return along the coast.
We'll head up Lon Las Ogwen from Port Penrhyn and then onto Pentir. Using country lanes we'll then start climbing - high upto Hen Dinas Dinorwig - there are amazing 360 degree views of the mountains, Puffin Island & the Great Orme. We'll then continue cross country onto Bontnewydd where we'll join Lon Eifion cycle path. After a short cycle we'll cut across to Dinas Dinlle and have lunch at the Caffi HEMS at Caernarfon Airport (all proceeds from the cafe go to the Welsh Air Ambulance)
After lunch we'll use Y Foryd along the Menai Strait to take us to Caernarfon - from there Lon Menai to Felinheli - and a mix of cycle path and road back to Bangor.
The first part of the ride upto Hen Dinas Dinorwig is hilly - there will be chances to get your breath where the route levels out and descends and we'll make plenty of stops for a drink - and at the top of each climb. There will be a nice stop for lunch. The return leg is relatively flat. You'll need to be able to cycle the distance of 42 miles to join the ride. We'll be keeping a pace of 10-12 mph. We never leave anyone behind.
The route is mainly cycle path and country lanes. There are some sections on busier roads.
