Newcastle Phoenix Cycle Club welcome families, accompanied children and individuals to join us for a leisurely social ride from The Cycle Hub to Fausto Coffee, Roker, Sunderland. The ride distance will be nearer 35 miles than 40 as the system has taken account of the ferry crossing in the total!
We'll be riding route 72 along to North Shields Ferry terminal for a quick trip on the ferry over to South Shields picking up route 1 coastal path over the cliffs. Lots of great seaside views on this ride and staying mostly on cycle paths with a few short stretches on quiet roads. Mostly flat with just a few short hills.
The ride is suitable for most bike types, however road bikes/skinny tyres may find some of the path sections a bit bumpy.
Please bring change for the ferry, suitable clothing for changeable weather, a drink and a snack and change for the cafe.
Don't forget a puncture repair kit, pump, and spare inner tubes, just in case. Spare tubes and other essentials can be purchased from The Cycle Hub before the ride.
We'll be aiming for a pace of 8-10 miles an hour, but nobody will be left behind. The ride will be lead by a trained British Cycling Ride Leader, however you (and your children) must be able to change your own punctures and be comfortable riding this distance, including short stretches of road.
If you'd like to have a shorter ride of about 18 miles you're very welcome to turn round at North Shields and take yourself back to The Cycle Hub from there. Alternatively a shorter ride of 17 miles can be had by starting out meeting us at the ferry terminal in North Shields at 11.00 am., we will hope to take the 11.00 am or 11.30 am crossing . If you're planning to meet us at the Ferry it would be helpful if you could drop us an email to [email protected],uk so we can exchange phone numbers and keep you updated on our ETA if the group is running late..
Ferry costs - adult return £2.70, child return £1.10 (with a U16 POP card). Please bring cash.
Please note - children under 16 years old must be accompanied by a competent adult cyclist. Maximum of 3 children can be accompanied by one adult.
We hope you'll join us for a fun day out! :)
