Have you ever been inside Ryhope’s Pumping Station and seen the engines in Action???
The Ryhope Engines Museum is based on the Ryhope Pumping Station which was built in 1868 to supply water to the Sunderland area. The station ceased operation in 1967 - after 100 years of continuous use.
The Museum is now regarded as one of the finest industrial monuments in the North East of England and is in a Grade II (starred) listed building. Although the station no longer pumps water, the two 100 horsepower beam engines are kept in working order by volunteer members of the Ryhope Engines Trust, and 'steamed' periodically for the benefit of our visitors.
In addition to the beam engines, built by R & W Hawthorn, are three 'Lancashire' boilers of 1908, two of which are in regular use, a blacksmith's forge, a waterwheel, numerous steam engines and pumps, waterworks accessories such as depth recorders, and many items concerned with the distribution and uses of water in home and industry.
This weekend they are steaming the engines and Guided Rides – Sunderland have been invited for a guided tour around the museum.
Starting the ride from the car park next to Kimmitt and Roberts estate agents we will be following, shared paths, quiet roads and waggon ways to make our way to Ryhope pumping station via Hetton Lyons Country Park and the newly resurfaced NCN1 near Seaton. When we arrive at the pumping station we will be shown around by one of their knowledgeable volunteers and we will be able to refuel at there café.
The journey back takes us back up NCN1 to Seaton where we follow the quiet back roads to Warden Law, then back to Houghton.
All the routes we will be cycling over are a variety of different terrains including roads, quiet roads, cycle paths, shared paths and Bridle paths Therefore, these rides are only suitable for Hybrids or Mountain bikes. E-bikes riders are very welcome to join us
