International Women's Day 2016 is to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. "Martha Hogg is one of the most important people to hail from Wigan, and arguably one of the most significant women in British history. A pioneering political figure, she also made a huge contribution in the town as a midwife. She worked in the poverty-stricken communities of industrial Wigan, later immortalised in George Orwell's book The Road To Wigan Pier - Tom Walsh So why not join Breeze Wigan in this canal side ride from Wigan Pier taking in the delights of Leeds Liverpool Canal - Leigh Branch all the way to the outskirts of Astley, to celebrate all Martha achieved. This ride is approximately 23 miles in total(however a shorter ride joining at Plank Lane can be completed - please let the leaders know by email if you wish to do the shorter version) but as along the canal is relatively flat with a few bridges to negotiate and totally traffic free. As this is one of the longer ride a lunch stop at the Old Boathouse, at mid point will be available so please bring cash if you want to get lunch and/or a drink. The trail is a mixture of imprinted concrete, crushed gravel paths and suitable for mountain bikes and hybrids without slick tyres. Wouldn't advise anyone to attend with a road bike. Children are welcome on this ride if they can make the distance but helmets must be worn by under 18's and bikes are not provided (if you are unsure of your child's ability why not take them on one of the shorter rides first to assess). It is advisable to bring a spare inner tube just in case, a lock if you have one and a drink and any snacks you may need for along the way. Any questions contact the Wigan Champions via email: [email protected]
