In Search of Spennymoor’s Astronomer
Sun 17th Nov 2024 10am 12 miles
Start outside Spennymoor Leisure Centre DL16 6DB
Join us for a Thomas Wright inspired pedal to Byers Green, Middlestone Moor, Kirk Merrington, Westerton and back to Spennymoor. Thomas Wright was an 18th century astronomer, mathematician, instrument maker, architect and garden designer. What a clever chap and he lived in Byers Green and instigated the building of Westerton Tower from where the stars could be observed. We will learn more about him and his achievements on our travels.
Westerton’s the highest point in the area so be prepared for a decent amount of hill climbing. However, we have factored in a downhill finale. Most of the ride will be on tarmac but with a few short stretches on reasonable quality tracks.
Winter will be properly with us by mid Nov, so please don’t risk getting cold and come suitably dressed for the weather eg warm gloves, buff, extra socks/overshoes and lots of layers.
In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Make sure your bike is in working condition and bring a spare tube to fit your tyres.
For any queries please use the option to ‘Message Ride Creator’. If you book and can’t make it please cancel your place so we know for sure who to expect on the day. For any last minute cancellations on the day please also add a note in the ride Conversation.
