In Search of Daisy Edis - photographer
Sun 22nd Jan 2022 1pm 11 miles
Start Gala Theatre DH1 1WA
Internationally acclaimed photographer, Daisy Edis, is the inspiration for this 11 mile ride. In the first half of.the twentieth century Daisy was a skilled portrait photographer whose work, with that of her family’s photography business depicted Durham life, whether photos of local firms, organisations and student groups or views of now long lost large houses and major council civil engineering schemes. So our ride will take us to the location of the family business, to some of the locations photographed by her and her family where we can compare the view today and to her home where a blue plaque was recently installed by the City of Durham Parish Council.
We will visit Saddler St where the family business was located, the old New College at Nevilles Cross, the site of the Newton Hall and with a detour to Gilesgate where Daisy lived and is buried.
We will follow sections of quiet road and off road paths largely around Durham City so a hybrid bike is most suitable, although a mountain or road bike would also be ok. There will be hills getting out of Durham but they are spaced out in the ride.
This is a suitable ride if you’re wanting to build up your confidence as well as for more experienced riders wanting a relaxed trip with a bit of chat and Daisy Edis history included.
In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Expect to be out for 2-3 hours. We will have an optional cafe stop after. Please come suitably dressed for the weather conditions and bring a spare inner tube that fits your tyres,
