Starting point

BN5 9PJ

Cat & Canary / Downs Link car park, Upper Station Road, Henfield, West Sussex.

This is one of two introductory Henfield Breeze rides this November; both almost entirely traffic free, along the Downs Link dismantled railway line. “The Downs Link follows 2 disused railway lines and crosses the Surrey Hills, the Low Weald, the South Downs and the Coastal Plain. Since the trains departed in the 1960's the embankments and cuttings have become a green corridor for wildlife and people. The route connects a variety of habitats, passing banks of wildflowers, trees, hedges, woodlands, rivers, ponds and streams. This provides food and shelter to many species of wildlife, some scarce or uncommon” We will be heading north towards Horsham to the small village of Copsale.  We will stop at the Village Hall for a warm welcome from the volunteers who open their doors serving bacon/egg butties, tea & coffee just once a month for passing cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Be sure to bring some money along or your own snack if you prefer. This section of the Downs Link is mainly flat cinder path, with one very short off-road section after the bridge over the River Adur, which can sometimes be quite muddy in the autumn and winter months. There is also a short distance to ride on the road along the B2135. After time to warm up, have a cuppa, chat and relax we will retrace our journey back to the start point.                                           ******************** Please come prepared for the weather forecast on the day - a few layers, a lightweight jacket to keep you warm and dry, gloves and good grip on your shoes (plus any medication you may require). Wearing a helmet is advisable; if you don’t have one please do not to worry you can still take part. If you enjoy the bike ride and would like to come again perhaps you could look to buy one then. This ride is only suitable for mountain bikes or hybrids with knobbly tyres. Please give your bike a check over before you leave home, are the tyres pumped up? Are the gears and brakes working properly? Always carry a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit and a pump, just in case. This steady paced ride is approximately 13 miles.  I suggest you would need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy this ride, you may prefer to build your confidence first on a few shorter rides. We will always ride at the pace of the slowest rider and no-one will be left behind.
