“The Downs Link follows 2 disused railway lines and crosses the Surrey Hills, the Low Weald, the South Downs and the Coastal Plain. Since the trains departed in the 1960's the embankments and cuttings have become a green corridor for wildlife and people. The route connects a variety of habitats, passing banks of wildflowers, trees, hedges, woodlands, rivers, ponds and streams. This provides food and shelter to many species of wildlife, some scarce or uncommon” This challenging ride will be heading north towards Christ’s Hospital where we will have a brief rest before retracing our route back to Henfield. On the return route we will be stopping at the Village Hall in Copsale for a welcome cuppa served by volunteers who open the Hall doors just once a month serving bacon butties, for passing cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Be sure to bring some money along or your own snack if you prefer. The Downs Link is generally cinder path, but there are TWO very short off-road sections, one after the bridge over the River Adur, and the second just north of Southwater, which WILL BE MUDDY  in the autumn and winter months. There is also a short distance to ride on the road along the B2135. After time to warm up, have a cuppa and a chat we will continue back to the start point.                                                     ******************** Please come prepared for the weather forecast on the day - a few layers, a lightweight waterproof jacket to keep you dry, warm gloves and good grip on your shoes (plus any medication you may require). Wearing a helmet is advisable; if you don’t have one please do not to worry you can still take part. If you enjoy the bike ride and would like to come again perhaps you could look to buy one then. This ride is only suitable for mountain bikes or hybrids with knobbly tyres. Close fitting commuter type mudguards are not recommended as they are likely to get very clogged up. Please give your bike a check over before you leave home, are the tyres pumped up? Are the gears and brakes working properly? Always carry a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit and a pump, just in case. This challenging 21 mile ride will be at a brisk pace where possible, and IS NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS, however, we will always ride at the pace of the slowest rider and no-one will be left behind.
