Heels to Wheels

Heels to Wheels is a 12 week cycling and maintenance programme aimed at women within various workplaces across the borough who have not cycled for many years. Cycle maintenance half hour classes are held immediately after the weekly cycle ride (every other week)to provide essential information about maintaining a bike in good working order. Our objectives are to regain confidence and cycling skills with the aim that more women will cycle to work. The scheme is FREE and led by qualified women instructors on traffic free routes. This local project has been organised in partnership with Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust's Active Living Team to encourage health and well-being as well as commuter cycling. Both rides are organised as an after work activity and are based at the Three Sisters Recreation Area, Ashton-in-Makerfield Wigan on a Wednesday night 5.30pm. - 6.30pm. and Pennington Hall park, Leigh 5.30pm - 6.30pm Heels to Wheels is aimed to encourage females of all ages to take up cycling again - the free sessions cater for those who have not cycled for a while, and provide a relaxed, supportive atmosphere to help females regain confidence and improve their fitness levels. After the 12 weeks, on-road cycle tuition is provided for those who would like to commute to work. Participants are encouraged to bring their own roadworthy bicycle, but there are cycles to borrow on-site. Booking is strongly recommended as bikes are booked out very quickly.
