About the route
Heavenly Hallgarth
Thursday 17th August 2017 6.30pm 12 miles
Starting from Clayport Library in Millennium Place DH1 1WA we’ll pedal our way along Durham's riverbanks, climbing to Dragonville from where we'll escape the city via Renny's Lane and Sherburn. From here we'll head to Hallgarth, former home of the Bishop of Jarrow and the beautiful St Laurence Church. We'll head back via the Pelaw Wood cycle route and once more enjoy our favourite (and recently re-opened) route in and out of the City.
The route is varied and interesting. Averagely hilly for Durham standards and a mix of on and off road. The road sections are mainly quiet and the off road sections good quality apart from a couple of rough short sections. It's a lovely ride from the city into the heart of the countryside. Best for hybrid bikes.
We would only recommend the ride suitable for children over 10 years as there are some road sections needing particular care. Under 16s must wear a helmet. Please wear suitable clothing and bring a spare inner tube for your tyres. Also make sure you’ve got front and back lights in case light conditions are poor although we have timed the ride so that we should easily be back while it is still light.
Expect to return by about 8.15pm. We'll stop for a drink after and agree where on the evening.
