Starting point

Lancashire
PR7 7HZ

Navigating out of Buckshaw village off road and using cycleway to reach the canal. We will then head north along the canal to Whinns Lane, leaving the canal and making the long climb and descent to Brinscall Baths where we turn off and join The Goit. The Goit can/will be muddy in places so off road tyres are a must here.

After the pleasant meander through the tree lines path adjacent to The Goit we have a short road ride before joining Heapey Fold Lane for a steep off road climb to Healey Nab, and then a descent to the bottom of the lane. There are fantastic views from the top.

A short road ride then returns us to the canal which we follow back to where we first joined it and then retrace our wheel tracks back to Buckshaw.

Come and explore some of Lancashire's lesser known ancient past. Heapey Fold Lane is believed to of Roman origin and has been the site of archeological excavations in the past which uncovered Roman kerbing and there is evidence of Roman style cobbling at the base of the bridleway. Ancient maps mark the area as Street. The Goit is more recent and evidence of our industrial heritage - a water way to link the Rivington reservoirs with Rakes and Upper and Lower Roddlesworth reservoirs to support the water needs of the growing population of Chorley. We will also be riding a section of the Leeds Liverpool canal which is of course steeped in industrial heritage - canals were the freight motorways of the industrial revolution.

Approximately 20km of the route is off road which is a combination of canal, cycleway, and bridleway. The Goit can be muddy and bumpy in places, and the bridleway whilst firm can also be bumpy. There is one significant long hill on road and some short testy off road climbs. Mountain bikes, gravel bikes, or sturdy hybrids are advised. A good wide gear range will be required and tyres capable of off road and mud are recommended (knobbly MTB style tyres). This route is not suitable for road bikes or hybrids with road tyres.

We will pause for drinks, snacks, and photos as required. No café stops are planned en-route so bring your won drinks and snacks.

Helmets are strong advised and mandatory for younger riders. Bring drinks, snacks, sunshine, and a smile.

We never leave anyone behind
