Gilesgate to Rainton Meadows Winter Warmer

Sunday 8 February 2015 10.30am 14 miles Gilesgate to Rainton Meadows Winter Warmer Starting on Rennys Lane in Gilesgate opposite Gary Potts Motors DH1 2RW we’ll pedal our way to Durham Wildlife Trust’s Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve where we can enjoy refreshments at the new and improved The Meadows coffee shop who are keen to welcome us. Most of the ride is off road following Rennys Lane and the Hetton railway path with a 2 mile stretch on-road between Sherburn and Pittington. However, this is not normally busy. For Durham this is a ‘flat ride’ with just one noticeable hill along Rennys Lane. We’ll be retracing our route on the way back. Children are welcome but recommended for age 10+ due to there being some on-road riding. Helmets are compulsory for under 16s. The off-road sections are a decent surface so the ride will be most suitable for hybrid bikes. Please don’t risk getting cold and come suitably dressed for the weather eg warm gloves, buff, extra socks/overshoes and lots of layers. Make sure you’ve got front and back lights whatever time you go out in the winter. As the weather is unpredictable at this time of year I will keep a particularly keen eye on the weather forecast and if forced to cancel I’ll let you know by 9am on the day at the very latest.
