About the route
Starting point
Lancaster Castle, Castle Park
Lancaster Lancashire LA1 1YJ
Lancaster
Leaving historic Lancaster castle to cover 21 almost totally traffic free and level miles, the route starts along the banks of the River Lune where kayakers and teams of rowers can be seen out practising. On reaching the impressive Lune aqueduct the route joins the green corridor of the Lancaster canal with a variety of bird, plant and animal species on view as you meander your way north to Carnforth. At Carnforth you can take a break at the station where scenes from the film "Brief encounter" were shot and explore the heritage centre. The return trip follows the canal once more before taking a diversion into Morecambe the birthplace in 1926 of Eric Morecambe where you can see his statue as well as the Art Deco Midland Hotel, and the views across Morecambe Bay towards the Lake District. The final leg of your journey will be an easy ride along cyclepaths into Lancaster and back to the Castle.
