This ride is by Central London Outdoor Group (CLOG) http://www.clog.org.uk. Non CLOG members can come up to 3 cycle rides or other events to try us out before joining. https://membermojo.co.uk/clog. CLOG is aimed at adults rather than families. Cycle ride: 3 forts, 1 bird reserve, 1 abandoned air raid shelter and marshes, sea and sky.(about 20 miles) Good cycling weather is forecast for Wednesday, so I plan to explore the coast and sea wall east of Gravesend. We cycle out of Gravesend on national cycle route 1 by the Thames and Medway canal, then turn north through the Shorne Marshes to Shornemead Fort. http://www.beyondthepoint.co.uk/property/shornemead-fort/ We cycle along the sea wall through Higham Saltings and Higham Marsh and Higham Creek where we hope to see the remains of Nore Fort. http://www.beyondthepoint.co.uk/property/nore-fort-remains/ Then on past Cliffe Fort and the Brennan Torpedo station http://www.cliffehistory.co.uk/cliffe_fort.html We will cycle further along the sea wall to Lower Hope point and back then along Meade sea wall to Cliffe where we visit the church, churchyard and the old charnel house (for storing bodies found on the marshes). https://www.facebook.com/CliffeChurch/ We may also see some lovely birds at Cliffe Pool RSPB reserve https://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves-and-events/find-a-reserve/reserves-a-z/reserves-by-name/c/cliffepools/index.aspx And hope to explore the salt lane air raid shelters http://www.beyondthepoint.co.uk/property/industrial-air-raid-shelters/ Lunch will be at the Six Bells http://www.sixbellscliffe.co.uk After lunch we cycle past Cooling Castle, Cliffe Woods to Higham where we catch the train back to London. Hybrids or Mountain bikes strongly recommended as there will be some rough off road sections (but no hills) - no skinny wheeled road bikes! NB The route of this ride partially overlaps with others I've done on the Hoo Peninsular but I've not done the coastal and sea wall sections or the Cliffe and Nore Forts or the Air Raid Shelter Meeting up Be on the train that leaves Stratford International (this is a different station to the main Stratford station) at 10:34 getting into Gravesend at 10:48. This train started from St Pancras International http://trains.im/schedule/W89039/2017/06/07/ You can also catch the 9;53am train Charing X calling at Waterloo East, London Bridge and lots of other stations getting into Gravesend at 10:53 http://trains.im/location/CHX/2017/06/07/4/GRV My mobile for use on the day is: 07475639620 Penny NB Central London Outdoor Group is non-commercial and events are organised by other members of the club on a voluntary basis.
